Matt Barrie has signed a new multiyear contract with ESPN that has him continue his responsibilities hosting SportsCenter and other roles surrounding coverage of sporting events at the network. Barrie, who first joined the company in March 2013, is a co-anchor of the 2 p.m. EST edition of the studio program and is an 11-time Emmy Award winner. Outside of the weekday show, he has also been the host of College Football Final since 2019 and calls Thursday night college football games as well. Barrie also worked on a one-hour presentation of College Football Live ahead of the CFP National Championship Game from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
Starting this year, Barrie has been working as a play-by-play announcer for TMRW Golf League (TGL) matches alongside host Scott Van Pelt and reporter Maty Smith from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. ESPN is currently airing TGL showdowns on its linear networks under a multiyear deal with the startup league, which is backed by investors such as Fenway Sports Group, Steve Cohen and Arthur Blank among others.
“ESPN has been my home for 12 years, and there’s no other place I’d rather continue my career,” Barrie said in a statement. “I’m a college football junkie, and a golf nerd, so this job is perfect for me…. I’d like to thank Burke Magnus, Mike McQuade, Dave Roberts, and Mike Foss for their belief and support. I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve accomplished and continuing to grow and have fun.”
Throughout his time with ESPN, Barrie has also hosted the College GameDay program on ESPN Radio and took part in coverage of the XFL as a play-by-play commentator. Furthermore, he hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee starting in 2018 before the event moved to Ion and Bounce TV three years later. Barrie hosts editions of SportsCenter on the Road emanating from major sporting events, some of which include the Masters Tournament and PGA Championship.
Before joining ESPN, Barrie worked as an anchor and reporter at KXAS-TV in Dallas where he anchored live coverage of select local teams and also hosted sportscasts on the weekends. In addition, he formerly co-hosted the Matt and Tim Show on 1400 AM The Team in Columbia, S.C. while anchoring sportscasts and hosting other programming for WLTX-TV. Barrie commenced his media career as a reporter covering the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers at WJFW-TV in Wausau, Wisc.
“Matt is a consummate professional and a key part of our SportsCenter, golf and college football coverage,” Dave Roberts, executive vice president and executive editor of sports news and entertainment at ESPN, said in a statement. “His passion for the game, versatility as a host, and ability to connect with fans make him an invaluable member of our team.”
