ABC News has announced the promotion of Averi Harper to serve as the outlet’s new Political Director, relocating her from New York to Washington D.C.
Harper has served as the Deputy Political Director of ABC News since 2021. She joined the outlet in 2019 as a campaign reporter and producer, reporting on the 2020 presidential campaigns as both a primary and general election reporter. In her new role, she’ll report directly to Washington D.C. Bureau Chief Rick Klein.
“It’s a privilege to help shape our political coverage at such a pivotal moment,” said Harper. “I look forward to continuing our commitment to straightforward coverage by delivering informative reporting and thoughtful analysis that cuts through the noise and focuses on the issues that matter most to our audience.”
“Averi is a trusted journalist and leader whose integrity and rigor elevate ABC News’ political coverage and analysis every day,” added Klein. “She has been a valuable partner, and I know her nuanced perspective will serve our audience well as we continue to cover the most important political stories of our time.”
In her new role, Harper will manage the political unit for the network, and also coordinate coverage with polling partners, the Decision Desk operations team, and the ABC Owned Television Stations arm of the company.
Before joining ABC News, Harper worked as a local television reporter in New York, San Francisco, and Greenville, North Carolina.
