With the departure of Allison Smith in December as News Director for KCCI-8 in Des Moines, the Hearst Television property was faced with selecting only the fifth ND in the station’s history. President/GM Brian Sather turned to the station’s Asst. News Director, and gave her a promotion.
Earning the bump up in responsibilities at KCCI is Natalie Cabieses. She’s been at the station for 13 months, and previously served as an Executive Producer at WISN-12 in Milwaukee, where she oversaw coverage of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.
A graduate of the University of Central Florida, Cabieses worked at Cox Media Group’s WFTV-9 and at WBBH “NBC2″ and WZVN-7, formerly Waterman Broadcasting stations now within the Hearst family.
“Natalie is known for being able to make strong decisions, fast and keep a calm demeanor,” Sather commented. “She was instrumental in developing our news and weather coverage before, during and after the Greenfield tornado. Her compassion and news judgement is a big reason KCCI is Iowa’s News Leader.”
Cabieses, who is Hispanic, said, “I am incredibly humbled to be in this position to not only cover the news fairly and accurately, but also to empower young women who may be able to see themselves in my chair one day.”
She added that it was during breaking news coverage of the Greenfield tornado which gave her the spark to lean into a larger role at the station. “I was proud of the way our team came together to bring viewers critical information in a life-threatening situation,” she said. “I learned a lot about how every department at KCCI is committed to serving our viewers.”
