2024 was a consequential year due to the presidential election. After being dubbed “The Podcast Election” new Edison Research data shows just how much increased listening from self-identified Republicans happened, while listening dropped by Democrats.
In 2024, the percentage of those identifying as Republicans hit new heights in weekly podcast listenership totals. 30% of the overall audience claimed they were Republicans.
The previous high was 25% in both 2023 and 2022. That 30% figure of conservatives listening to podcasts weekly represents an increase from 23% when the question was first asked by Edison Research.
Democratic Party listenership had dropped in the same timeframe. In 2019, 40% of those surveyed as weekly podcast listeners identified as Democrats. In 2024, it dropped to 37%, reaching a new low.
Those who prefer not to identify themselves by political party has remained relatively steady. In 2019, 5% chose not to share which party they support. After reaching a high of 7% in 2021, it dropped to 4% in 2024.
As the podcast audience diversifies, it increasingly represents the overall U.S. population demographics more closely.
The rise in conservative podcast listenership coincides with several conservative podcasts — including The Dan Bongino Show, The Ben Shapiro Show, The Charlie Kirk Show, and The Megyn Kelly Show — all reaching the upper echelons of the overall podcast landscape.
According to Edison Research figures, shows from Shapiro, Candace Owens, and Matt Walsh show up in the top 50 rankings of the overall podcast space during its 2024 ranker from the fourth quarter.
